Ancient miners constructed the mineshafts to get to the ore veins.
This makes ore veins easier to search for, adds strategy to mining, and gives a stronger reason to navigate the maze-like mineshafts. Of course, ore veins DO NOT need to generate next to mineshafts 100% of the time, ancient miners fail to find their ore sometimes.
Other ideas include:
- ore veins are exposed only at the end of a mineshaft tunnel to make them harder to spot
- mineshaft loot chests store "buried treasure maps" leading to other mineshafts with ore veins
- mineshafts with TNT generated, giving a hint to players where to dig to find ore veins.
- ore veins not exposed, but hidden behind the ends of mineshaft tunnels, encouraging player to continue digging out the mineshaft.
One or more of these changes adds strategy and variety to mining, and gives experienced players an upper hand.
