An idea that I had would be to add deepslate variants of hostile mobs (at least some of them), that would be slightly more difficult to avoid or defeat, in order to make the deepslate layer more difficult to survive in, which Mojang said they were intending on doing. The main idea I have for this would be a deeplsate creeper variant, which could either have a texture resembling deepslate or just a grayscale version of its original texture in order to make it harder for players to spot and avoid. I honestly don't think other mobs need to be modified at the deepslate layer, but I feel like at least making creepers more dangerous in the previously mentioned way would add a balanced increase in difficulty when the player goes below y=0, without making mining a constant fight to survive or without making it as easy as it would be above y=0 but just with slightly harder to mine stone and the warden if you happen to be in the deep dark biome. This might not work with Mojang's design philosophies for Minecraft, but I felt like suggesting it anyway, just in case it does.
