In real life, an Azalea is similar to a Wisteria, almost vine like with multiple root like trunks.
My suggestion is to have the log texture look like an intertwining vine like trunk. When cut, the cross section will essentially look like a bunch of circular knots in the wood. Or if were just worried about the aesthetic and not "making sense", it could look like spalting, or have a burl pattern.
This pattern will translate to the planks, stairs and slabs as a cool, swirly pattern or something along those lines. Very exotic looking, and definitely something different.
The color is a matter of debate. I wouldnt mind seeing a mesquite or rosewood color, it would look best with the cool pattern IMO.
As an aside: I would like to see a wood type that doesnt have a plank pattern (not stripped logs, which dont have stairs and slabs). This would be a great opportunity to explore that with this unique tree that technically isnt much of a tree IRL anyway. Dont overthink it.
