I have an idea for shields to be balanced without nerfing or buffing them; we add some skill into Using them.
Normally when you block it deflects arrows, swords and fists, but if we had blocking only reduce damage by a set percentage (similar to sword blocking); it would balance the shields.
Another feature you could add to shields is parrying: an advanced combat technique with a small cool down used by attacking with the shield at the same time as your opponent does; If done successfully it will block all damage dealt while dealing half the damage they dealt back to them and also deal a large amount of knock back as well.
I put a lot of thought in to this overhaul, and I really hope you like it!
Another thing to add is a game rule that changes the combat from classic to advanced; so that players who don't like the changes can still enjoy the who can click faster competition of Classic combat.
