I think copper is not very useful right now. all you do is make a spyglass, a lightning rod, and then you're done and the rest is for decoration. it's a shame that it's so abundant but you only really use it when you're later in the game and building instead of focusing on beating the dragon. since Iron is more rare, people will be getting leather armor a little more first, before getting Iron.
it would be a bad idea to make copper armor or weapons, but what about making plated leather armor? if you have four copper, you can use a smithing table, which only costs 2 iron. then you have leather armor that is a little more durable and gives a little more protection. you could also do this with stone tools, making them do a little bit more damage, and a little more durable.
and maybe with tridents as well, and if they have channeling, maybe it can summon lightning even without a thunder storm, although that may be too overpowered, you would be the judge of that.
my idea is that when something has been upgraded to copper, the durability bar turns a different color, and when it runs out, it loses the buff. also, maybe leatherworkers could ask for 5 copper ingots for an emerald.
I hope you liked my Idea, and I hope at least part of it gets put into the game.
