Charcoal has been used for drawing since prehistoric times and is still widely used today. Charcoal could be used to make marks on block like redstone dust.
Instead of crafting "charcoal dust", we should just be able to hold charcoal in our hand and use it on a block and it draws a mark, with a 1/32 chance of breaking every time you draw. On average, you'd be able to draw on 32 blocks with one charcoal. All you need is a stack of charcoal in your hand so if one breaks, you can keep drawing until you run out.
The marks don't drop anything and you can erase it by hitting it or putting a block over it. That way you can build over it without having to remove it first as to not impede your flow.
Since it it has no redstone functionality, it can be implemented much more flexibly than redstone dust:
- Draw lines on the sides of block and underneath.
- More control how the lines connect, such as drawing 2 parallel lines adjacent to each other without it connecting to each other at every block like redstone would.
- Line weights. When you lay down charcoal, you can draw on it again to make the line thicker and thicker
Uses
Art or lettering, such as part of pixel art or detail in sculptures, or as its own medium like cave paintings.
Charcoal drawing would be useful in construction for making temporary marks. You can draft out where you want everything to go or plan out changes to an existing build.
Can function as important markers of information, like directions, boundaries, or an X to mark the spot
