Minecraft has a lot of blocks, but what if they had more? Why do we need them? Please don't just add lists of things - these will be marked as spam and removed! Also, no furniture, guns, or vertical/"sideways"/"upright"/"standing" slabs (yes, we see you).

Apply glow ink sacs to a spyglass to give you a night vision spyglass

Spyglasses are already a great feature, but with so much underground exploration in the deep dark, they could be even more useful. Don’t have access to night vision potions yet? This could be the next best thing! It obviously requires you to stop and look around whenever you want your night vision, so there’s enough downside for this to be balanced and not obsolete traditional night vision potions.

    I just thought of this, as well. I'm glad someone has already made a thread about it! :) I often find myself exploring a dark cave system and wishing for an item just like this, so I can better see all the ores and openings in the distance, and better judge where I should be aiming to go next. This is especially true after the introduction of the "Caves & Cliffs" terrain generation.

     

    To be honest, it sounds a bit overpowered, so maybe the crafting recipe should be a little expensive - as expensive as brewing a whole batch of Night Vision potions, at least. It is different enough from said potions (and therefore a noteworthy addition to the game) as described by the OP of the thread:

    • you can use it anywhere, whenever, and
    • there is no effect that expires,

    but, as opposed to a potion effect,

    • it requires you to stop and look around situationally, and
    • only what you see through the spyglass gets Night Vision-ed, not your entire field of view.

     

    To avoid tool clutter, perhaps it could even just be an Enchantment for the regular Spyglass. I daresay it would be thematically cool if said Enchanted Book could be found in the Ancient Cities, given

    • their need for decent loot, and
    • the dichotomy between the Deep Dark and a See-through-the-Dark Spyglass (the same way you find the Echo Shards/Recovery Compass in the place where the game's deadliest mob slumbers),

    buuuut... maybe that specific placement would make the item too late-game or hard to get.
