In the latest ore distribution snapshots, diamond ore has "reduced air exposure," so that strip mining and caving are balanced strategies. Caving has the potentially greater rewards at the risk of encountering mobs, while strip mining is the safer option. However, when strip mining at y=-58, where I should find the most diamonds, I ran into 0 diamonds after 1500 blocks travelled. Plus, with reduced vein sizes, there will be about 3 diamonds per vein on average anyway. That means that strip mining is probably a waste of time.
I think more diamonds should generate (not exposed to air, like lapis) in 1.17 because:
- There should be many different strategies to mining. If caving is the only good way to find ores, there won't be as much variety in how people prefer to mine.
- Consistency between versions. Strip mining is effective in 1.16, so players will probably still want to have the option to strip mine in 1.17.
- More variation underground. If the space between caves is nearly useless, players won't ever want to visit it except as a tunnel between caves.
