One part of the Caves and Cliff update that I am personally really excited about is the new emphasis on water underground, mirroring the real world with flooded cave systems and all that.
This led me to come up with the idea of Subterranean Seas, absolutely enormous cave types that span hundreds of blocks in every horizontal direction and a few dozen vertically, making them quite a bit larger than other cave types. On the outer edges, aquifers would form, along with connecting caves. They'd be half-filled with water, creating a vast ocean populated by sea grass, fish, drowned and glow squids.
What would this add to the game?
1. Such a cave type would be very atmospheric (especially withe addition of fog) and awe-inspiring, taking normal cave generation and amplifying it in the same way that shattered savannas amplify normal mountain generation.
2. They'd be fun to explore and settle because of how big they are. Imagine a server of players building villages on either side and then boating across to trade with each other.
3. Caves like this would also present numerous opportunities for expansion. New structures (I've personally always liked the idea of illager cities on stilts being found over underground seas.), mobs (sea serpents for example), blocks (limestone, maybe), etc. These aren't necessarily part of the suggestion, but are there to illustrate what's possible.
I hope that anyone reading enjoys this idea and that it gets considered.
Thanks for reading.
