    A few addendums to my last post since I feel like these are important to bring up, while also keeping in line with the sole idea of Lanterns actually being the topic and also because I'd run out of characters otherwise:

    • The lighting distance for Lanterns and Soul Lanterns is increased from 15/10 to 16/12. This is to further increase their utility and also make them be optimal in use for cave systems, especially deeper down you go in the world. However, utilizing more than one lantern won't double the lighting distance you get from them.
    • The Lantern and Soul Lantern items can now be equipped as Legging gear. When equipped as Leggings, they will be placed on the hip of the player's character, allowing them to be carried.
    • The Lantern and Soul Lantern items now sway back and forth every time the player walks forward and backward, but only if character sway is on.
    • Lanterns and Soul Lanterns can work underwater.

    I'll also be talking about a new Lantern type elsewhere that I think should be added into the game, but this thread is only for functionality, not a new item.

    I also had the same idea, as lighting up the new mega caves in 1.17 is going to be a huge chore. Many people play Minecraft for a short amount of time, and this would make progressing through the game a little easier. Also, when they introduced the Warden, they said they wanted to recreate the scary feeling of their first night in Minecraft. This would only add that. 

    Also, while holding the Soul Lanterns, make it so Piglins are scared off. Instead of using them as legging gear, we should be allowed to hold the lanterns in our off-hands, making it easier to fight mobs in unexplored cave systems.
