    is it jus a more complicated way of puting down torches?

    Love everything you explained. What if the arrow illuminates terrain in the vicinity of its trajectory.

    I don’t see how this is comparable to putting down torches.   Torches can only be places down around you.   Torches spawn proof the area.   Glow lichen doesn’t spawn proof and if it was an arrow, you could shoot it into the the deep dark.  Also many people hate torch spamming, where glow lichen is a softer more natural light source and is more appealing.     

    If you find a big hole in a cave, you could light up the bottom to see how far it goes down and how many mobs are down there.  It wouldn’t get rid of the mobs to be OP, but just light it up to give you information.  That isn’t possible with torches.   If you come into one of those big caverns, you can’t see the other side much less the roof, I would like some extra light before I start to explore it, which would require some long range lighting.

    The only reason not to have this depends on how well the caves are lit up once caves and cliffs comes out, but considering it is called the deep dark, I could see this being really useful.
