Its a way to continue to add new blocks as well as keep inventory space manageable ! The idea is that you'd have 2-3 different brushes, the memory brush being one of them. Once you have created a block which is similar to another block, like a polished version, you can have the base material (like blackstone, andersite etc) in your offhand, and use a selection of the memory brush to place the block in this particular version. The brush remembers that you have created this block before, like the knowledge book, and can apply the different texture for you. Instead of making a stack of polished andersite, you could have a stack of andersite in the offhand that gets placed as polished andersite when using the brush.
I imagine the following controls: Right click to place block, left click to change mode. Picking a block would switch out the off hand's blocks in place of the main's brush. Shift pick-block would swap out the main hand.
This is also future proof since you can add a base material and have many versions come off it, so grimstone would have 5 settings, normal, polished, bricks, tiled, chiselled.

Biome variation : This would allow you to place a block that changes colour depending on biome, in a different biome whilst keeping the colour. Using a biome's 'key item' you could make an object like the banner patterns and put that into a slot this brush had when viewed in the inventory.
