We have seen many old features return to the game in recent updates, features like lanterns, lecterns, and crying obsidian. And with the upcoming update being about the underground, why not bring back rubies?
Introduction to Rubies: Rubies would be an ore that generates in the same levels as diamond but it will be rarer than diamond and comes in max ore veins of 3. A diamond pickaxe is required to mine them and they drop 1 ruby shard (and 1 more based on level of fortune). You would need 9 shards to make a full ruby.
The New Use for Rubies: A full ruby is needed to fuse it into a tool or armor item using the smithing table. It would add a reddish shade to that item. The ruby adds a bar that is seen below the tool/armor's durability bar.
Purpose of The Added Bar: The added bar serves like saturation shield for the tool/armor's health, it takes damage without damaging the item's main durability. The added bar also gives an added level of efficiency and protection, giving possibilities of efficiency VI and protection V, but the bar runs down faster than normal durability and you cannot repair the bar. Enchantments like unbreaking and mending don't effect the added bar.
Tool/Armor Resurrection: The added bar also makes it where ruby fused tools/armor can respawn back with the player if they die. When the item comes back, the bar breaks along with the ruby added with it. The item also takes damage from the power of the respawn.
