  This would just remove the fun and use of leather armor.

  This could finally give a big enough use to get frost walker on my boots.

  I think that they're intentionally trying to give Leather Armor some sort of use. Leather Armor is currently absolutely useless and immediately thrown away if not skipped over. What they're doing is give it a sort of niche use so that you might want to use Leather Armor and trade it in for your other armor piece in a few cases, just like they've done with Gold Armor in the Nether Update.
