Bats are, annoyingly, useless. They serve no purpose, and just fly around aimlessly, killing themselves when they fly into lava streams and startling you with their dying screech. I, propose a new mechanic that is both helpful to the player AND is (more or less) realistic!
Bats, should be found in deep caves that open up to the surface one way, or another, in colonies of 10 or more. Bats, in real life, fly out of caves at night in swarms in search for food. I think you might see where I'm going with this
There should be multiple bat colony spawning zones or spots in deep caves that breach the surface, all at different spots. They could spawn in those zones in loaded chunks while the player is nearby/in nearby chunks, and they would spawn in already attached to the bottom faces of blocks. Once night arrives, they will fly off to the surface, screeching and chattering as they go. If a player is hopelessly lost within the vast, wildly huge and unfamiliar caves, they could choose to follow the sounds of screeching/and/or the colony of bats themselves. Be warned, however. If the player happens to be in the deep dark, and the warden also hears the bats, they will also be attracted to the screeches and the pounding of footsteps that trail it....
The bats would fly around the entrance and surrounding area of the deep caves they came from untill the sun begins to rise. Then, they would follow their previous paths downward, back to the zones in which they spawned previously
