This is why Phantoms are my least favourite aspect of Minecraft
- Their spawning mechanics make the game more frustrating
They force me to run into my house and right click on my bed, or they punish me for exploring the world away from my home.
- They take forever to fight
Fighting them takes insufferably long, they fly into the air and stay way out of reach for a 20-30 seconds, and they're high enough that while using a bow is a viable option, I feel like I need to carry a bow solely for this one mob, which isn't fun.
- On Bedrock, they do way too much damage
On Normal, Phantoms do twice as much damage than on Hard in Java, and thrice as much as Easy/Normal in Java.
- Their design feels unfocused
It feels like the design of the Phantom is meant to be easy to avoid (slow movement, only spawns if you don't sleep), but if that's the case they're not a great punishment for not sleeping. If they weren't designed to be a punishment, they do feel like one, and I've been feeling a lot more tied down to my home since they were added. There are a number of ways they can be improved though
- Spawn location
Phantoms are very bat-like, so they can spawn in the new caves (upcoming cave update), where their slow movement and circling above the player is much more manageable
- Spawn conditions
They could spawn normally with other mobs, provided their movement and attack patterns are tweaked a bit. This could keep them from feeling like a punishment for not sleeping
