A kiln: a brick or hardened clay furnace variant, could smelt clay, stone, and miscellaneous materials at increased speed. It could also smelt clay pot components and function as a work station for a villager job – archeologist – to expand on the potential of archeology when added to Caves and Cliffs.
As a smelting station, it would fill a vacant role – fast smelting of clay/bricks, stone, sandstone, glass, terracotta, miscellaneous. It could also expand archeology-related mechanics by allowing the smelting of user-made clay shards for further customization of painted clay pots. Two clay balls could craft a raw ceramic shard, like the pressure plate recipe, which could be dyed into a colored ceramic shard and fired in the kiln. These would be plain colors or perhaps different patterns than the images present on rarer archeologically discovered shards. The kiln might also be an alternate place to smelt/to fire complete clay pots.
As a job site, the kiln could be found in a small archeologist’s field station spawning occasionally at archeological sites with an archeologist profession villager. The archeologist would offer trades in ceramic things, shards, brushes (enchanted?), or other rarer archeology tools or items. The structure and trades would interactively introduce archeology, and I think this would really tie the addition of archeology thematically and mechanically to existing systems without disruption, and synergistically expand existing smelting and villager trading.
