The new caves are very pretty, if you can see them. Naturally, though, they are very dark. Torch spam is ugly and tedious, and often only lights the bottom surface of the cave. We need a new, aesthetically pleasing, efficient light source to light the new large caverns. This could be done with a space light - a floating light source with a wider light radius.
How it would work:
The item would be crafted from an item related to light with an item related to flight. Preferably, one or both of these crafting ingredients should be scarce, but not rare, so that players would use them sparingly. Glow ink sacks and phantom membranes could be good candidate ingredients. The item, when placed, would be an entity with physics, like an armor stand, which would rise and then float some distance above the ground (perhaps 8-12 blocks). It could be shot down with an arrow for convenient removal. It would provide light dynamically, the way handheld torches or flame arrows do in Optifine. Rather than simply emitting light-level 15 at the source and then decreasing one light level per block, it would produce the maximum light level for a full 16 block radius before trailing off, thereby lighting roughly twice the radius of a normal light source.
