Honestly, caves should be darker and maybe even nerf the brightness option so you are forced to use night vision potions and torches more. That would also make new unique light sources be viable, like a miners helmet or a wearable lantern so you don't have to even place torches but make it use coal as a fuel source. There could even be a new pet that glows! At this point in time, lots of people just turn brightness all the way up making caves not so dark. Literally I never use torches when I go mining because I can see just fine and only use them for places I will come back to too keep mobs away but if I'm going to just explore and never revisit the caves I don't use torches at all. I like the idea of the mods that make caves pitch black (Hardcore Darkness) forcing you to actually make use of torches more often. Maybe it's because back in the day I played CastleMiner Z but Minecraft just seems too bright in places it shouldn't be.
Also, I think they should scale the new caves down by like 20%. They are just too big in my opinion. I love bigger caves but not MASSIVE caves, just bigger. Huge caves work in some games but I don't know I don't really like them being as big as they are. They just look unnatural to me. As for moving around, climbing claws\shoe spikes\grappling hook\rope\other tools? For example, if there was an item you could put on boots and your hands that had visual spikes that'd be cool or an enchantment that does that. Maybe I've just played too much Terraria.
