Now that Minecraft has huge, open caves, the rock generation problem is worse than ever. Noisy veins of Granite, Andesite and Diorite are dotting the cave walls like pimples and clog up Steve's inventory in the most annoying way possible. I've seen that the crew at Mojang have been experimenting with generating rock types in layers like the world's most undercooked lasagna, but it doesn't work. The rock types simply don't go well with each other, and it still doesn't solve the inventory problem.
Solution: Geobiomes. Geobiomes are areas in the world that are determined the same way as Biomes, completely randomly generated. Geobiomes are about 4 times as large as normal biomes, and their mapping is completely independent from regular biomes. Meaning that a Geobiome can contain 2 and a half biomes within it, and a desert can be a part of 2 geobiomes at the same time. It's like a whole seperate layer in the biome map.
The Geobiome determines the type of stone generated within it - a Granite Geobiome will only generate Granite, for example.
This would also require upgrading the rock types, Granite, Diorite and Andesite, to full-on Stone variants, just like Wood has Variants. They would each have their own variants of Cobble, Bricks, Polished, Smooth, etc. and can be used to make Stone Tools just like Blackstone.
Last feature is Rock Deposits. Rock deposits are similar to the rock veins except much larger and rarer, and generate with a stone different to the one in that Geobiome.
