Glow lichen definitely takes Minecraft in the right direction, but having only one source of light underground reminds me a lot of the old nether; glowstone was the only light source, and it got a bit boring at times.
Lichen could exist in different colors to make cave lighting more diverse. It would be really cool to see patches of blue, green, red, and even white/gray lichen in caves. Players might be more inclined to explore caves to collect different colors for different builds.
