With the news caves looking especially wide open in some areas, I figured we are probably due for a new lighting idea. Glowsquids are a step in the right direction for the underwater caves, but they don't act as light sources. I'm no programmer, but I assume this is because loading in a bunch of moving light sources into a game like Minecraft can be resource intensive.
My idea is some form of light source that can be thrown/launched, and possibly stick to surfaces. My favorite is a glowing crossbow bolt/arrow. It would most likely have a crafting recipe similar to tipped arrows with potion effects, except with the glowing ink sac rather than a potion. It could be fired from a crossbow/bow/dispenser like any other arrow, except it could become a torch-like light source on impact, with the light being emitted from the face of the block it is launched into as long as the arrow is stuck in the block. After a while, the glowing effect could slowly wear off, and then the arrow would despawn (unless the player picks it up before the timer expires). It would probably have a far longer time to despawn compared to normal arrows. Maybe there could be a way to extend its lifespan with more ink, like the firework rockets?
Glowberries could also possibly be thrown like snowballs, and splatter onto a block face and act as a similar light source to lichen?
These probably come with many optimization issues, so I understand if they might not be feasible.
