  That would be really cool! I think the idea of maybe living in the caves would be really cool and for that, a source of wood would be necessary. :)

  No thanks, while I'd love to see giant mushrooms down there and maybe even something like the nether mushrooms with glowshroom blocks you should have to either find a mineshaft or go up to the surface for wood. Having different resources available in different areas encourages exploration. 
  
  And it's not even like "up" is that far once you have access to soul sand for water elevators. lol
