Milk buckets have remained basically unchanged since all the way back in version 1.0, and with recent and upcoming changes to the game I think a few additions to milk mechanics could open up some interesting possibilities. Some ideas:
- Cows can be milked with both buckets and glass bottles. However, you can only drink from the bottles.
- Using a bucket of milk will now pour it onto the ground much like a bucket of water. There's no functional purpose to this - unless you want to make a "crying over spilt milk joke" - except...
- Leaving milk out in the open, perhaps by pouring a bucket into a 1x1 hole, and letting it sit for one in-game week will turn that milk into a Block of Cheese! The resulting cheesy product can be split into slices and eaten as a snack or possibly used in other new recipes.
- Milk bottles can be brewed into splash and lingering milk bottles just like water bottles, and the lingering variety can be used to craft milk-tipped arrows that remove all status effects from the target they hit. Especially in the latest combat tests, where potions seem to have a much stronger influence tan before, this could introduce an exciting new dimension to PVP.
- I am certainly aware that drinking milk out of bottles would make ocean monuments and mining fatigue much easier to deal with. This could be addressed by making milk bottles unstackable, and making cows only periodically milk-able much like shearing sheep.
