Minecraft's food system is rather boring. It's simple and uninteresting, you could even say it's bland. There are many things that could make it much better so I've decided to propose a new mechanic. Condiments!
As there name implies, condiments would be types of spices, seasonings, and jams. You wouldn't be able to eat them on there own, instead you would have to apply them to foods in a crafting grid. All condiments can be applied to all foods creating a large option of combinations. These combinations would be categorized into three groups: good, bad, and neutral. Good combinations would reward the player such as by giving them slightly more hunger points or saturation than normal food would. Bad combinations would do the opposite and slightly decrease how much food would normally refill. Neutral combinations would just be combinations that don't apply in either categories and don't effect food.
As an example let's use salt. A new item found in ocean biomes as salt blocks. When broken down in the crafting menu they can now be used as a condiment. They could go good with meat like steak or certain vegetables like baked potatoes. However they go bad with cake and pumpkin pie. There are plenty of ideas for this system. We could have new crops that grow these seasonings such as ginger roots or pepper plants. But to prevent this post from reaching the character limit, I won't talk about them.
So what are your thoughts on this mechanic? Constructive criticism is appreciated.
