Petrified Trees And Amber Underground (Caves & Cliffs)

One small structure that I would really like to see underground in the Caves & Cliffs update is a petrified tree structure. The should have a feel similar to fossils, in that they are entirely buried and are not all that necessary to find, they should be a fun little things. They would be roughly the size of a tree, and sideways, made up of petrified logs. Some of the petrified logs would also be replaced by amber encrusted petrified logs, dropping amber as well when destroyed. Amber is petrified tree sap, and so its being found in/with petrified wood makes sense. Amber could be used as a potion ingredient, preferably for something quite useful, and petrified logs would be made into variants, much like any other wood. They would have a grey, ashy texture and coloring. The tool to mine these blocks would be a diamond axe, giving a particular reason to crafting it, and serving as the first high tier required material for axes, similar to obsidian or ancient debris requiring a diamond pickaxe. While amber does not have many uses, it does not need to. This is not a new material that is important and necessary, such as iron, it is a fun small thing to find, that has just a few minor uses. (Besides, in real life it is only really used as jewelry and incense.)

    Petrified wood (and other plants) could be a type of stone, occasionally replaced with "amber ore." Amber could be used as an alternative to glass in most recipes, creating an amber version of the intended item, (ie. amber bottle, amber pane, etc.)

    Petrified wood is actually really colorful. I would have it be grey when first found, but then it should be able to be polished to get its colorful form. Planks could be made from these but they would act as if they are stone

    Wow this was amazingly thought out! Making it a biome would be ideal and adding structures like exposed fossils and the tree would be so amazing to find! It can be named "prehistoric caverns". If you make amber more of a useful or sought out material this can really add to exploring the caves and getting new resources in creative ways

    Very cool idea with the petrified logs.
    I did think of an idea for amber in potions. I believe it should be used to make haste potions. Then from there you could use something like prismarine crystals to turn that into a mining fatigue potion.

    Yes yes yes! I want this to be a transparent block, so I can use pistons to trap mobs in amber! That would be a fantastic decoration! I imagine it would look somewhat like a honey block, that golden color, but slightly translucent so you can sort of see through it but not really that well? I want this to be a thing! Especially if it can be used in magic, too!

    First of all, I would like to thank those of you who have voted and especially commented. It is very supportive and I enjoy it. Hopefully we can get more votes on this so that other people will look at it. I taking the time to respond to your comments as I always appreciate it when others do so for me.

    Haruneko125: Having it as another type of stone would be interesting, but I would personally prefer to see it a little bit rarer, more as a structure. As for the name of the amber resource, I personally like the name "amber encrusted petrified log" as it is not quite an ore and this provides a more interesting naming convention. Also, I happen to like the word "encrusted" there. I find the idea of using it as another form of glass interesting, especially compared to the new tinted glass. I wonder what its properties would be, maybe act as an opposite to the tinted by magnifying light?

    cranzag: Thank you for this, I had known beforehand that it can be colorful, but I wasn't quite sure how to implement it. I like your thought on having both a normal and polished variant, for both gray and colorful.

    FolkUnicycle450: I am glad you find this well thought out, as I put extra effort into making all of my posts this way. I'm not sure about making an entirely new biome based around this, but when reading your comment it did make me think of the lush caves, maybe we could port this feature into it? Additionally I agree with the idea of getting resources in new and creative ways, which especially makes me think back to the diamond axe part in my post (we really do need more diamond tier materials for the other tools). You may be interested in another idea that I have been toying around with that may make a future post, involving collecting sap (maple trees or rubber trees for syrup and rubber?) with a bucket from stripped logs of the type.

     CapsuleJ1891: Using it for haste would definitely work, and it is definitely a more wanted/will be one of the more used of the potions, especially for long obsidian mining trips (ever tried building a house out of the stuff?). In regard to mining fatigue, maybe amethyst crystals would work better, as with the glass mentioned by Haruneko125 it is starting to serve as an opposite.

    Andrew Wright: I am not sure if it would go transparent or not, it could honestly be either way. I had originally dismissed the idea of trapping when I first wrote this post, but now you get me thinking back to it. It could work several ways, being a sort of stronger honey block that can pull entities in contact with it when moved? (Interesting transportation dynamic there) Or maybe something you can share a block with like powder snow, but which is very hard and slow to get out of? Both, with resistance either way and having it move any entities partially stuck in it? What would this mean for builds with it a decoration, and should it have two forms then for sticky vs. not with the sticky a sort of soft/melted form. (If you couldn't tell by that, I also work often with redstone, and commands) By the way, it should have a very distinct texture, maybe something a bit... swirly looking? Also with trapping it makes me think to its potential in the new archaeology mechanic. A lot to think about.

    Someone suggested amber being used instead of glass, so what if potions brewed in amber bottles had greater potency or duration. (Perhaps with tinted glass having the opposite effect) and maybe for balance the bottle is consumed on use?

    reanim8edcorpse: I am not sure if amber being used to make a new type of bottles was what they had meant, and I if done, it would probably have some effect other than to change duration and potency, as redstone and glowstone dust already have that effect. This may be something that would add unnecessary complications to potions bottles and such, but at the very least I do agree that consuming the bottle would help add balance, though I am not sure how that would work logistically. Currently I would probably prefer to go without amber bottles, but I am glad you are thinking about balance, and if you have any other ideas how to implement amber bottles, or any other ideas regarding amber, please do respond with them.

    Ok, a very different way amber could interact with potions is with amber totems (or idols if you prefer a different name.) They are sort of jewelry like addition since real amber is used in jewelry, and act as a different way of applying potion effects. You infuse the amber totem with an effect and then when you drop below half health the totem shatters and releases the stored effect. You could also comsider having a sort of variable crafting recipe which allows the player to pick how the totem will be triggered. But the idea works without that.

    Reanim8edcorpse: I first of apologize for taking so long to respond this time. I had to think about it for a little while and then just kept forgetting to get on and do it already. In regard to the new totem/idol/charm suggestion you made, I really like the idea of custom configurable items that respond with effects under certain set conditions. They would likely work similarly to fireworks in that different materials could create the different criteria in the recipe, and would be crafted with some new block, similarly to how they plan to at some point add a specific block for firework crafting. I will note though that I am not sure if this the right time to add it, and feel that it could be better implemented at a later date within some sort of magic oriented system update. While you have specifically mentioned amber, in regard to this post, I would actually venture to use all types of gems for different effects (not potion effects how I am using it here), and use them, as well as plants, as basic components for said magic system. This would also serve as an excellent catalyst to add more gems, as well as providing some specific and useful items for said magic system. It should be noted that to craft the block whose UI would be used for crafting these, or something beforehand that would craft this, should use some rare and much later game material than we currently have now. While this may not be added now, it has at least advanced some of my other ideas.

    Melly Dow: While I don't think that some way to petrify preexisting wood would make sense, and while I do believe it should be added as its own block, I do agree with the idea of making it fireproof and more blast resistant. If a petrification process was added in this update though, it should have something to do with the new archaeology system, not that we know much of how that works yet. I will note that while this might not be the easiest material to find, there will probably be enough to build with if one or two are found.
