I suggest a totem pole.
To create a totem pole, you fist get at least 3 wood logs of the same type, then place them all vertically on each other.
Next you strip each block with an axe, then click on the bottom log with blaze powder (how I imagine this working code-wise is it counts the blocks above it as being a part of the totem pole). Now your totem pole is ready.
To use the totem pole, you click on one of the blocks with a mobs signature drop,(or closest related item) then a carving of it's face would appear. you cannot carve the same mob twice on one pole. (so if I want a spider carving, I use a spider eye, zombie -rotten flesh, chicken -egg wolf -bone etc)
Basically what happens is this rearranges the spawn rate of mobs in the area. The mobs at the top of the pole will spawn the most, and the mobs at the bottom will spawn the least. if a mob is not included in your totem pole, then it will spawn very rarely (or never, I'm just not sure...)
Also if you put a totem of undying in the top slot, then the pole will keep you safe if you are in range. (if you die, the block with the totem disappears) If you put in a certain type of seed, then the crops from that seed will grow the fastest.
The totem pole's range depends on the xp level of the person who made it at the time, so If you are level 30 it reaches 30 blocks, and so on (moves in ten, so no 51 or 72s), maxing out at 1,000.
