I agree, there could be astronomer villagers, thinning air with heights. You could have cube planets with each of the eight edges being a "great barrier" that complicates game mechanics and gameplay in a way never thought of before. This theme could be an extreme gamechanger. However, one thing that worries me is the tangibility; can a computer process so much data? Does this have any effects on the overworld (it certainly would.)? How would you get between planets? But as I write this, I thought of the End: Islands that are seperated but can be entered via portals; they are right there in the coding! But what if we instead tried a different type of travel; a rocket would certainly not be fitting, but think of something that is!
I don't know, I'm just pondering all the possibilities; truth is there is an endless amount.
This idea is hot crap. Mojang has to keep a vanilla minecraft. This would throw the whole vanilla ideology out the window. This has nothing to do with caves and cliffs as you said. Also creating even 2 planets (the moon which isn't really a planet but if planets were being added they would to and mars which is the closest planet to earth) would be a too big update much less the solar system.
