Ecotones - transitions between biomes

Ecotones are transition areas between biomes.

In the game, they'd be a special type of biome that is spawned between two regular biomes, which makes the transition smoother. Between plains and swamp, there could be marsh, between tundra and temperate zones, there would be boreal forest, between plains and mountains there might be foothills et cetera. Some existing biomes could become ecotones. I don't want to go into detail which ecotones there would be, as I want to argue for the general concept, not a particular realization.

Note that this is not meant to be between every possible combination of any two biomes. For example, there might be ecotones between some very broad categories (like between temperate and tropical) and some very specific combinations as mentioned above, in any case within reasonable bounds. And there is no need to introduce them at once, could be done in one or two of those per update.

Note that I also have this on r/minecraftsuggestions. Can't provide a link given the rules of this site, but it should be easy to find. The title is identical.
