Most player suggestions regarding gold boil down to, "Increase the durability" or "Make it have better stats," but I think there's potential for much more exploration than that. What if gold and netherite both had the same potential to be used as end-game equipment? A player could choose to go for a more conventional build with netherite to maximize their raw stats, or they could choose a much more customizable and out-there build using gold equipment for all sorts of magic properties attached to their weapons. Some suggestions:
-Wearing gold armor could give the player an invisible "sanctitude" stat. Sanctitude has several subtle impacts on gameplay. First, it behaves as a multiplier for EXP gain. If you're wearing a full set of golden armor, you can earn up to 1.5x the EXP from any task. Because enchantments are so crucial to the playstyle gold promotes, reducing the grind needed for levelling could be an attractive offer to a player. Second, having high sanctitude gives you a chance to deal critical hits against mobs. Golden weapons have an innate crit chance attached, but having higher sanctitude will increase this chance even further. (THIS DOES NOT APPLY IN PVP.) Finally, sanctitude impacts the chance of receiving status ailments from enemies.
-Gold equipment could also offer unique, exclusive enchantments. Wouldn't it be fun if you could make a sword that shoots beams when swung? A pickaxe that breaks multiple blocks at once?
