Currently, when you encounter a deep, dark pit in the caves, you have to stumble around in the dark trying to get down so you can light up the area. That's fine currently, but with new hazards such as dripstone stalagmites coming to the game you could jump down and fall on a stalagmite. So it would be really nice to have a gravity-affected light source to help out with that (and a feature like this would fit perfectly in the Caves & Cliffs update!).
People have suggested this as a feature for candles in the past. However, I think lanterns would be a better choice: if they only fall when not supported, it won't break any preexisting builds because right now lanterns have to be supported to be placed. So this would just be an additional feature for lanterns on top of preexisting functionality.
A nice side effect of this is that lanterns are currently just another lighting option similar to torches (with being able to be placed on ceilings their main advantage besides aesthetics). Making them able to fall would make them a bit more appealing to use while caving and hopefully justify the iron used a bit more.
