Take damage when in cold biomes or cold situations.

You can prevent the damage by maybe wearing leather armor so leather armor will have more use or standing in front of a campfire. Take damage in cold biomes like the snowy taiga or when it snows on mountains, cold oceans, and cold rivers, ice spikes, etc. Since powdered snow does damage, maybe just like powdered snow it will also take damage.

  Standing by warmth or heat could protect you from the cold for a time. There could be a meter

  I think additional things that would make this effect more realistic is if in cold biomes and snowstorms you also get this cold effect. This would be weaker in just a cold biome, slightly stronger during snowfall and super strong if in powdered snow. It would also be nice if a campfire could get rid of this effect in a small area around it. Also, it would be interesting if a hot effect were applied if you use this armor in the nether or other hot biomes.

  Regarding cranzag's comment, this counter could be your heart's slowly going blue from right to left. The damage would start when it reaches the last red heart to the left. this would make sense as a player already having damage would succumb to hypothermia quicker. Additionally, as the blue hearts collect a slight slowing effect like when hungry would be a good indicator you are freezing over.
