Placeable Nether Quartz

The geodes were just added with the new beautiful amethyst clusters to match. You should now be able to place nether quartz crystals down and get a similar crystal to the amethyst. These would not give off light like the amethyst crystals. The reason I thought of this was because one of the first things I did in a caves and cliffs snapshot was replace all the amethyst in a geode with nether quartz to see what it would look like, and I had to use end rods because there are no placeable crystals.
