I suggest simplifying this to just Pipe Block. Normal pipes and connector pipes are one in the same. If anything, there should be a valve you can place on a pipe to direct flow through junctions. I also suggest pipes that don't lead anywhere to just be open, so players can crawl/swim through as well. Closing an open pipe simply requires blocking it.

Pipes can be waterlogged, and water doesn't leak out non-open sides of the pipe unless the pipe rusts (wax the pipes). First, the water drip texture would fall from a slightly rusted pipe, then something like the rain particle would drip from a somewhat rusty pipe, then water would just flow freely from the most rusty of pipes.

Pipes like this would add a new way of not only item transport but player transport, and could be used well in factory settings.

I was thinking about this as well and made this as a proof of concept.

they could get rain of your hose so you don't have to deal with the water lick graphic. Also they should be able to drain water and push out water.

incentivizing mass-placement of pipes (which would have to be a block entity, since they can hold any item) sounds like a great way to cause lag. other than that, though, it does sound like a great idea

Ivy NB They wouldn't cause any more lag than hoppers (less, since they only have one input, one output, and hold one item, versus hoppers constantly checking the space on top)

If the pipeline pushes items at the same speed as hoppers, this would allow for some very compact item sorters.

pipes would be useful for carrying items upwards.I think pipes should also give out a redstone signal when an item passes thru it.

How about you can through items into it or use a hopper and the items will go into the block at the end of the tunnel or just fall out of it. Also, infinet item storage or more per pipe.

Artimies7 on Twitter had some great recommendations for this concept. In addition to carrying items they proposed pipes should also carry projectiles such as ender pearls or arrows. This would allow for quick base transportation.

what if a new block would be added that would allow you to be transported through pipes? or throwing a ender pearl to teleport through?

I like lemonrose535837's idea of pipes giving off a redstone signal when items pass through it. maybe detector pipes? or comparators are able to detect items moving through.

If a pipe isn't connected to a block at its destination, then it should spill incoming items into the world.

I really like this idea, hope they add it

There should be one pipe variant that connects automatically to nearby pipes. Objects flow into the tube from the tip of the hopper to the opposite end. Tubes can be connected to a box that collects items or blocked with a block and then items collect in a tube that has 3 hidden slots. Open pipes, in turn, spit items out. The pipes are not a full block, they are similar in size to a closed conduit. They can be waterlogged.

Copper is so useless, this is a fantastic idea for copper!

This is such a great idea as it would make moving items around long distance far easier and cheaper without making hoppers redundant, it gives a use to copper for the people that don't want the blocks after getting a telescope and some lighting rods and it gives a new decorative block for the people that want to do a steam punk build.

there should also be a forked pipe and a filter pipe what the fork pipe would is evenly separate the items and the filter pipe would filter certain items into it also if Redstone runs into the pipe it turns into a blocked pipe which blocks items from entering

Item pipes are a thing that minecraft has been missing since hoppers were added. Hoppers are essentially flawed item pipes. (They work great as hoppers though!)

We really do need dedicated item pipes. Everyone uses hoppers as item pipes, but they look ridiculous as them, it doesn't make sense to use hoppers as them and probably cause more lag than dedicated item pipes would since they have to check for items on top of them.

Item pipes could be improved versions over hoppers as item pipes as well, they should make even better and more reliable item sorting possible. There are too many items in the game these days (not a bad thing to have lots of items) for there not to be easy, simple and reliable auto item sorting.

This idea would be really great and would make copper really useful. As of now it is not just for few items but giving transportation would up its use. Like some els said just simple as one item instead of 2 and vale or redstone to to leaver to change its direction.

This sounds fantastic! Heck, just to make a way to transfer items without redstone accidentally turning it off would be nice. Recipe could be

    [C][C][C]
    [   ][  ][   ]
    [C][C][C]
producing 16 pipes. Would be nice to have a functional block for copper that isn't something we'd only need a little of. Also, maybe it could have a faster item transfer speed, so it can compete with hopper minecarts.

I agree with this, hopper lines are too laggy and bulky for item transportation. Their primary purpose should be to collect and store items. Copper pipes can help transport items with less lag, and they're also great for decoration!

I love this idea although I do think it is a bit overpowered.  maybe there would be a limit to how far pipes can carry stuff the same way Redstone works.  if you exceed that limit then your items will become stuck in the pipe and you'll have to break the pipe to retrieve them

Items should only be able to travel through pipes once in a hopper so that the hopper doesn't loose its functionality.  Pipes should also not be readable by compairitors.
