The noteblock is probably one of the most beloved blocks in the community, and with that a lot of talented artists created and arranged in Minecraft lots of very popular songs. However, the noteblock actually lacks of a feature most instruments share: holding a note. In the game there is already a blockstate to indicate if the block is actually powered or not and that is completely fine.
A powered noteblock should stay powered, denying any further interaction with redstone inputs as long as it stays powered, but since it is a noteblock, it could continue to play its note, note over and over, but by holding it in a continous sound.
The normal behaviour, of a noteblock playing a note and then stop could be acquired by a redstone pulse, like a button or observer.
I would like to share a few pros that could help you see why this slight change could fit well into the game
- It allows for a whole new range of variation in sound making to create even more complex melodies and smoother sounds
- It is intuitive, because if you quickly power the block, the note plays then it stops, if you keep it powered, it keeps playing
- In the 1.17 Update we are going to see a whole new mechanic with sculk sensors where sound will become more and more important. Having a way to finally and reliably control sound production would be a very well received change
