Anthracite, often called hard coal, is a form of coal that is found at much deeper depths than normal coal in the real world. It is more pure and compact than normal coal, and would translate nicely into Minecraft. It would be found at deeper depths than normal coal and could replace the coal that spawns at those deep depths. Another possibility could be limiting its spawning to the nether, to make sure normal coal isn't made redundant too quick.
Anthracite would be a reward for players who have ventured deep enough into the underground, and would be a much loved and needed upgrade to the standard coal that players are forced to use no matter how accomplished they are in a certain world. Minecraft has no fuel progression, so this would add another layer of depth to the game.
As for Anthracites abilities, we could look to its real world benefits. It is much more efficient than coal, so it could have many benefits; it could last much longer, universally smelt things quicker, or even both!
