The following should be done to give minecraft worlds a spherical geography without otherwise changing the feel of the game. Divide the overworld and nether each into two equally sized dimensions that act as halves or in this case hemispheres. Then just have them mapped to each other so that you can cross the edge of one half and seamlessly walk into the opposite half. The two would be 'positioned' as if they were stacked together facing away from each other and so that a similar opposite positive mapping happens along the corners. This would create a seamless spherical coordinate system with any world acting as if it was a sphere despite being two flat seamlessly connected dimensions. This would effectively eliminate the need for world barriers, introduce better world size customization, allow greater immersion for extreme explorers and those creating maps set on smaller worlds, lay the groundwork for additional potential features, and introduce geographic realism in an unrestrictive manner for those interested in such things. The biggest challenges would be creating seamless wraparound dimensional boundaries and connecting corners.
There is some precedent for such drastic world topology changes in the elimination of the far lands and their replacement by the world barrier.
Alternatively perhaps this could be introduced as a type of world option instead?
