My idea is for a new type of block light source that is charged up with redstone and dims over time like real life glow in the dark.
It uses glass or stained glass panes and glow ink from the glow squid. Using stained glass makes glow blocks colored (but in standard game still emit normal light).
They can be charged with redstone or glowstone, charging with glowstone works like the respawn anchor (right click), it is permanent until removed. One glowstone dust per light level or one block for light level 15.
Charging with redstone all glow blocks charge by one light level per redstone tick (10x / second) until the light level equals the redstone power going in (max of 15)
The rate of diming depends on the color of stained glass, the blocks dim to their minimum level set by glowstone (default 0)
- Clear: 1 minute per level
- White: 10 seconds
- Light Gray: 1 second
- Gray: 2 levels per second
- Black: 5 levels per second
- All other colors dim the same speed at 10 levels / second
Comparators read the light level and observers pulse every time it changes. These make much needed timers and pulse extenders. Opens a lot of possibility for creative builders, redstone, and just neat adjustable light sources.
