My idea is that, if a dropped item despawns on any block that can be brushed in the upcoming 1.17 update (dirt, gravel, etc.), that block would "store" the item (one item per block). Regaining the despawned item would work exactly like retrieving artifacts as showcased during Minecraft Live 2020; when the block is entirely brushed away and the item doesn't break (lower probability than usual), the item is dropped.
The main idea behind this proposal is that, instead of extremely durable materials like diamond or netherite disappearing after five minutes for seemingly no reason (within the logic of the game), it makes more sense if, with time, the items became "buried" in the soil. If multiple items land on the same block, the game would weigh the value of each item (enchanted armor over non enchanted armor, netherite over diamond, etc.) and place the most valuable item in the block for later retrieval.
Of course, with my knowledge of the 1.17 update consisting only of what was shown during Minecraft Live, I have no idea whether or not this would fit into Mojang's future plans for the game. If there are no problems implementing this feature, however, I think this would be a welcome addition to the game and appreciated by the players who want to see their items (or at least one of them) again.
