I'll be quite blunt about the fact that I don't really like beds in Minecraft. They're way too cheap to make, and make it trivially easy to skip the most difficult part of the early-game. I was even more annoyed with the addition of Phantoms, a new mob that actively punished the player for not sleeping, and thus skipping that challenge.
My proposed fix for this is "super nights" (stupid name, I know, it's not final). Every 30 or so ingame nights will be designated a super night. During these, a few unique things occur:
- Hostile mobs will spawn more frequently on the surface, and are more likely to spawn with armour, weapons, enchants, and potion effects (spiders only).
- Phantoms will spawn (up to 5 per player at a time), however, they no longer spawn if players don't sleep.
- Beds will not be able to skip the night, although you can still set your spawn with them
- Hostile mobs will have increased tracking range
- Hostile mobs will be able to spawn in Mushroom Biomes
Another major change is to beds: for every time a player sleeps to skip the night, the super night will come one night sooner, which means that players will now have a meaningful choice between sleeping or toughing out the night in order to skip something far more dangerous. The super night still remains on a static timer, however, but one that is long enough to make it too frequent (and thus obnoxious) for players who already don't skip the night. Similarly to current Phantoms, super nights can be disabled via gamerule.
