As of writing this, the Smithing Table has one use: to upgrade Diamond tools to their Netherite counterparts. But what if we could upgrade any tool to the next tier of resource?
For example, take a stone pickaxe and an iron ingot and upgrade your stone pickaxe to a iron pickaxe. The "tiers" would go something like this: Stone -> Iron -> Gold -> Diamond -> Netherite. The reason why included gold in the list is to give gold an additional use, in that gold has a higher chance of receiving better enchantments. Wood and Leather don't make the tier list because I don't think it would make sense to be able to upgrade a wood pickaxe into stone, and have leather armor be upgraded straight into iron armor
To balance this feature? Use Experience levels: the more you upgrade a tool, the more expensive it gets, kind of like repairing in an anvil. Crafting pickaxes would still be viable because crafting a Diamond pick and upgrading it to Netherite would cost less overall Experience than upgrading stone to the tiers leading up to Netherite.
I would like to see this get implemented because it would give more use to the Smithing Table and add another interesting aspect to Minecraft's crafting system.
