Combat when riding minecarts, horses, boats, and flying with the elytra is kind of underwhelming. Why are they are only for transportation when cavalry would be so much cooler? Why can't I ride around, impaling stuff on a lance the way I should be able to?
Here's how it should work:
>There should be lances
>When sprinting on a mount, or just moving really fast (ie. with an elytra or minecart), all hits in the forward direction are considered charge attacks. Charge attacks deal a lot of damage, break plants, and deal excessive knockback. They also knock enemies off mounts.
>When moving at critical speed and holding a trident, you can stab mobs by looking at them. (when they are in range for being stabbed and in front of you) This is treated as a charge attack.
>A shield can block charge attacks, but loses massive durability, and you may still be knocked back. This still works when mounted, helping you not get knocked off your mount.
>These mechanics make jousting a viable Minecraft sport!
