My idea is that if you stand still for a set period of time somewhere high up while holding a map, the map is filled in based on what you can see. This would mean that you would be able to fill in a large area of a map if you climbed to the top of a mountain. This would also mean that if you were standing somewhere in front of a mountain or wall, it wouldn't fill in what was obstructed by the wall or mountain. This would be useful if you had a large flat area of land, as it would save you having to spend a long time running around to fill it in. A potential issue with this would be multiple players with different render distances as some would be able to map areas faster.
