I recently had a dream in which I was exploring the new Nether in Minecraft, and I came across this new biome that consisted largely of obsidian and crying obsidian, with lava oceans surrounding these islands, and upon waking up, I realized it was an amazing idea, though I did deviate a bit from the dream in writing this.
The new biome would have plains-like terrain made almost entirely of obsidian and crying obsidian, with the occasional obsidian statue of a warped or crimson tree (to give the feel of being mysteriously petrified by something long ago). Ghasts and wither skeletons would spawn rarely here. Also, for a volcanic glass-like feel, there could be glass making up portions of the terrain, and a new block: broken glass. Broken glass would deal a small amount of damage when walked on, unless you're wearing boots, and like sand, it would fall when unsupported and could be smelted into solid glass.
There would also be two more blocks: chiseled obsidian and chiseled crying obsidian, which would only be obtainable by harvesting them from the new biome, being found in some type of ruin structure. They would not be craftable, as obsidian is extremely hard and brittle, and would require the expertise of some long-forgotten craftsmen.
Finally, ancient debris would spawn more commonly in this biome, so players dedicated enough to mine through all that obsidian have something to show for it. Also, it could add to the "mysterious ancient calamity" feel of the biome.
