A gold chestplate is crafted with 8 gold ingots (72 nuggets). If you smelt a gold chestplate that has full durability, you only get a single nugget in return.
What a waste.
I propose at least two new items: Iron Scrap and Gold Scrap.
Instead of directly smelting a piece of equipment in the furnace, the player will place it on a crafting table (or a hypothetical new work station) to receive a number of scraps according to the durability and crafting cost of the item, with a 20~25% material loss.
Example:
[CraftingCost] * 9(nuggets) * 0.8 * ([CurrentDurability]/[MaxDurability]) =RoundedDown=> Number of Scraps Recieved
A full-durability chestplate will, with this, give 57 scraps that can then be smelted into 57 nuggets in a furnace (or 54 at a 25% loss).
