While I understand that the soul sand valley is supposed to be harsh and desolate, it really needs more content and complexity.
Soul Oil: Soil oil is a liquid that forms rivers which snake through the soul sand valley. Touching soul-oil while on fire from soul-fire will extend how long the player is on fire for. Soil oil also slows the players movement more than water, but can be counteracted by depth-strider.
Soul oil can be bottled and used to brew potions (perhaps a soul sight potion that highlights mobs in blue and allows players to see while in lava or highlights experience-giving ores through lava/if visible. Soul oil will create upwards bubble columns when above basalt, and will create downwards columns when above magma blocks.
When in contact with lava soul oil will create a hissing sound/smoke particles. Lava can spread through soul oil source blocks and non-source blocks, effectively replacing the soul oil. When a source block of soil oil contacts lava, the soil oil will evaporate. When on top of lava, soul oil will only spread out two blocks in each direction, continuously hissing.
Soul Springs: Pools of soul oil that bubble, that can vary significantly in depth and size. These mini-lakes could be home to a passive or aggressive mob,
Decrepit Stalks: Grows on the banks of soul oil lakes, look like spiky spines, works similar to bamboo as a fuel source but is significantly more effective, stings players that brush against it, and can be crafted into bone meal.
