    What if you break the obsidian with a wooden pickaxe and finish with a diamond pickaxe? Will it break? What happens to the durability?

    I agree with TheCamelCamCan. I feel like this will be exploitable. No vote.

    To respond to TheCamelCamCan and Marthinus, durability on an item doesn't go down until the block is actually broken. Therefore, almost breaking the obsidian with a wooden pick and then switching to a diamond at the end would have the same effect on durability as only using the diamond pick would. It would only serve to waste your time.

    @TheCamelCamCan:

    At first, i like this idea. Then i realizes it would be exploitable. I think you meant start with a diamond pickaxe then finish with a wooden one to save time and not waste durability on the precious diamond one. However, I think that this feature could still be implemented, as I hate having to start over punching a hard block, because it is not too exploitable or a feature could be made where the tool durability is reduced when mining is started. However, saving another int variable to every single block and a timer that counts down for the block regenerating in the NBT would take storage, RAM, processing speed, and possibily even a new required NBT format for efficiency which I’m SURE would be a pain in the backside for Mojang. Unless there is a good solution to all this, I think we just leave it as is and focus on important features, like Bedrock Edition being fixed :/
