Maybe similar to how Basalt is generated, as it needs ice and lava, so maybe something along the lines of that? I'm not entirely sure, but this is definitely a good idea!

Instantly thought "where is the generator for it?" when I saw it. It's basically just prettier cobblestone functionally so it feels like this should be a thing logically.

I think it should be like basalt, lava on blue ice, but instead of flowing onto soul soil, it flows onto basalt

Since Blackstone is the Cobblestone equivalent, and Basalt is a Granite/Andesite/Diorite equivalent, the former Basalt generator should generate Blackstone and NOT Basalt.

Since generating Basalt requires Blue Ice and Soul Soil, maybe the Blackstone is generated when Lava flows against Paced Ice with Soul Soil under the Lava?

They could also make the basalt generator generate blackstone instead since basalt is pretty usless and can easily be found in basalt deltas

Also cool would be if one was able to craft blackstone with basalt, then that would kind of be an indirect blackstone generator.

I also had this idea, I think it would he great if you'd be able to gejerate blackstone by smelting up basalt in a similar way you get stone from smelting cobblestone, a bit more logical would be if it would only work in blast furnaces as blackstone is kind of a vulcanic stone.

I think that blackstone could generate when lava has soulsoil below and glowstone above. Basalt could not generate, but will be obtained by combining blackstone and nether bricks (similar to crafting andesite). This way blackstone generator would not need not nether blocks.

I think they should replace the basalt with Blackstone in basalt generator. So instead of getting basalt, it should give Blackstone.

                                              OR

Keep basalt generator the same, just add a smelting recipe of blackstone (may be smelt basalt gives blackstone , I think is good too because we can make a bunch of blocks only with blackstone so its logical that player have to go through 1 extra step of smelting of basalt into blackstone, in order to play with so much variations of blackstone )

Basalt generator should generate blackstone instead. Basalt would no longer be renewable, but honestly, who needs basalt for anything other than decoration? Cobblestone is renewable because it is useful, but basalt is just a building material. If you really need it, there is plenty in the deltas.

I can see the comments up above, and although I am not as a fan of Basalt as a building material I don't think they should remove the Basalt generator, just make this a separate generator. If Lava interaction with Blue Ice and Soul Soil can make this, surely they can think of what would make Blackstone instead of Basalt. Something had to have generated it after all, right? It's also the most aesthetically pleasing building material in the game right now and I want a way to get it in mass for my builds.

You could make it so that, of you combine basalt (renewable) with some other item, like ink sacs.

I feel like it should use the basalt generator and all that needs to be done is swap soul soil for soul sand. This makes the generators simple to convert ether way or run both at the same time! Personally i like both and don't think the basalt generation should be removed. I also see it being explained as less souls escape from soul soil and getting trapped then cooled in the lava, while soul sand lets lots of souls out and more souls get trapped making blackstone. Just how i would do it anyways.

I I like the basalt generator. The Blackstone generator should work exactly like the cobblestone generator except you place a piece of soul soil under where the stone will be created like the basalt generator.

you would need a set up like this

    --w--

    B--L

    --N--

    w=water, B=blue ice, L=lava, N=netherite block

It should be generated instead of basalt when lava touches blue ice

Why not just make Blackstone craftable? A great use for basalt would be if it was used to create this strange material! A potential recipe may be: 4 netherrack and 5 basalt = 9 Blackstone (kinda like TNT) or just adding a new block interaction. Perhaps if you have a magma block on the bottom (not soul soil), and blue ice overtop, then it would act as a generator?

Great suggestions, everyone. I think doing yet another cobblestone-type generator would seem derivative and boring. I like the smelting idea more. Another way would be to craft blackstone from basalt and charcoal.
OR, you know, at least add blackstone to piglin bartering.

And/or, a more extreme idea, just open up the crafting recipies of all stone tools and also furnaces to be able to use any kind of stone, including basalt, just like you can use any type of wood.
And give us andesite, diorite and granite bricks (polished, too) while you're at it, pretty please.

This is what i think. First it makes a lot more sense then a basalt generator a blackstone generator it makes more sense because blackstone is the equivalent of stone but in the nether . I don't suggest that the basalt generator gets removed entirely but that to make blackstone you need packed ice not blue ice .

I am playing in the snapshot and this is so annoying! It is such a great block, but it is not renewable! I would love it if you could "dye" cobblestone. Either with black dye. Or maybe by placing a cobble block and setting it on fire or placing it surrounded by lava. Going with the idea that black stone is ashy or burnt cobble.

it could work like basalt but with a different block instead of soul soil

Basalt could be smelted into blackstone sort of like how cobble gets smelted into stone.

Please get this more votes we're in pre-release 1 already and still this isn't in the game!

What I think of Blackstone is it's a stone but has a lot of soot/carbon deposits to make it appear black. So my idea of a Blackstone generator is a flowing lava, hitting into a block of Blue Ice, but surrounded by 3 blocks of Coal, 2 on the side and one at the bottom. I chose block of Coal as it is dirty and sooty as opposed to the Basalt that's being suggested. Also, basalt is generally defined as rock from rapidly cooled lava, which makes sense for the Blue Ice.

We're already on the pre releases, and Blackstone is still a non renewable resource. I really don't want to need to rely on addons for my server to make this a renewable resource. Everyone on my server plans on using this as a primary building material and we're gonna DESTROY that biome if we can't generate this or craft it in some manner.

There could be a crafting recipie for blackstone.
    1Bassult + 1coal or 1charcoal = 1 blackstone.
    ...
(i.e. how cobblestone and quartz can be combined to make diorite, andisite, and granite.)

they can make it generate with packed ice like blue ice for basalt

I feel like blackstone should be generated with lava and water, but instead of ice or soulsand make it a magma block so it burns the cobblestone. This makes it a more natural way to get it while in the overworld.

As of snapshot 20w28a its now renewable through bartering so this is no longer necessary. It is only confirmed for java, but hopefully it will come to bedrock as well.
