Making a Nether Portal is a little bit too easy for good Minecraft gamers. Unlike something like getting a level 30 enchanting system, the making of a Nether Portal should take longer and require more effort to gather resources like an enchanting setup does. I propose "obsidian shards". This idea has been suggested before by other people in the community, but not quite how I think would be best. I picture it like this; An obsidian block, which would still take a long time to mine with a diamond pickaxe, would break into 4 to 5 shards. These shards would look similar to that of prismarine shards and could be crafted back together to make a block of obsidian if you had nine of them. This would require the player to really grind for their ticket to the nether, and since obsidian is somewhat dangerous to get your hands on, this would increase the challenge of obtaining a portal.
