Part one; The idea, and Part two; The Execution of the idea.
Part One: In Minecraft, dogs are all the same and getting one serves no bonus to the player. They’re an accessory rather than a tool. They should be useful as well as a companion for the player. I present individuality. Dogs of different size, color, health and speed. Combining two dogs of different stats will produce one of averaged results. This would give players a far greater sense of connection and responsibility. Want something cute? Pick a small one. Want a fast one? Choose the fastest. Want something formidable as a guard? Go for the big one. A dog is no longer just a dog; it becomes your dog. This gives us a reason to have one in the first place.
Part Two: Implementation using existing functionality: Wolf/Dog suggestions usually mean adding way too many new models, textures, and new mob types into the game. But what I am suggesting is using the in-game functionality to do this, therefore cutting down the work required. Speed, damage and health modifiers are already in the game. To change the color, the system for changing the color of sheep's wool, but with a saturation limit should work. If you want to add spots to a dog, it may be possible to recycle the cloud texture, invert it's colors, randomize the alpha value, and apply to the mob’s “Armor Layer” with random X and Y coordinates.
This should keep the idea implementable in an afternoon rather than requiring the entire art department to make dog textures.
